The Art and Design Department is situated in the Leonardo Centre sharing a wide range of outstanding facilities with the Design and Technology (DT) Department.
The department promotes creative and ambitious work in painting, drawing, sculpture, photography & film, architecture, textiles & fashion, and conceptual art. The courses are a mixture of traditional academic approaches with individually tutored personal project work. A genuinely seven day week culture promotes highly skillful, practical work and studios are open for both prep and weekend work.
All pupils in the first year (Fourth Form) study Art and are also encouraged to work outside lessons in free time. The GCSE course gives pupils an opportunity to choose and develop their own specialisms from the facilities on offer. All pupils are encouraged to develop their own observational skills in drawing and painting. We strive to embed a sense of the joy of 'making and doing' and eshew too much digital media in favour of the traditional skills required to make images - supported by modern media but not dependent upon them.
The subject is very popular in the Sixth Form, which includes a number of dedicated Art Scholars. Qualifications and portfolios lead to a variety of higher education courses at the best colleges. Recent successes include pupils achieving selection for the Royal Academy of Arts online summer show, and admissions for Architecture to Cambridge, to The Ruskin School of Art, Oxford, St. Martin’s, Kingston and other leading colleges.
The department works in close co-operation with DT, taking advantage of a full wood, metal and plastics workshop and access to a 3D printer. Many pupils utilize the facilities to produce work that is not part of the examination system and are supported by a range of specialist staff. The diversity and high standards are achieved with the support of exhibitions, regular trips and visits by artists and designers, seminars and competitions.
