Central to life at Uppingham is the boarding house. There are fifteen houses; nine for boys aged 13-18, five for girls aged 13-18, and one house for Sixth Form girls who join the School at this point.
An Uppingham house is very much an extended home. The Housemaster or Housemistress and their family live in the house, rather than in a separate building, and the house is home for them as well as the boys or girls in their care. The fact that this extended family eats together is also important. The Housemaster or Housemistress will see their boys or girls every day at meals, at the evening house assembly, and informally by simply occupying the same building.
Each boarding house aims to represent a full spectrum of the personalities, characters and talent found across the School. Each house has a good mix of pupils who excel as academics, in sport or as musicians and actors.
The overall result is that every boarding house is a microcosm of Uppingham life.
All houses have their own dining room and a linked kitchen which makes house dining an important feature of Uppingham’s pastoral care. Meal times are a combination of formal lunches where visitors and a rotation of visiting staff are welcomed and more informal suppers and breakfasts which all offer a good chance for staff to engage with pupils and for pupils to feel at home.
Our Housemasters and Housemistresses work closely together and, as a consequence, the high standards and policies that exist in each house don’t differ widely. Each Housemaster or Housemistress is supported by a house matron providing medical support and supporting the pastoral care of the pupils. Each house has a resident tutor who also supports the Housemaster or Housemistress and is typically also a member of the team of tutors, each of whom will have a ‘night on duty’ each week in the house. The house tutor team also offer structured support to a group of tutees in the house.
Competition between the boarding houses is encouraged and celebrated and the rich diet of formal inter-house competition in sport, music, debating and general knowledge offer good forums for pupils to explore and develop confidence and new talents.
