Pupils join the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) at the end of their first year and serve for 2-3 years. They can also join on entering the School in the Sixth Form provided that they have experience from their former school. The 300+ cadets are divided between the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Army and RAF sections.
The aim of the CCF is to develop the cadets' powers of leadership, initiative and independence through the many and varied activities that are offered under the guidance of 23 officers and one full-time School Staff Instructor (RSM) and the Assistant SSI/Shooting Officer.
CCF activities are centred on military training, with an emphasis on shooting and fieldcraft for the army, sailing for the navy and flying for the RAF. We use MOD North Luffenham and Kendrew Barracks for shooting, fieldcraft and obstacle courses and RAF Cranwell for flying. The Navy section uses Rutland Water for its sailing. The Royal Marines section takes part in the prestigious Sir Stuert Pringle Trophy each year and the Army section in the large Combat Cadet competition for the Eastern Region.
There are two all-section annual camps, held in the first week of the Easter and summer holidays. They are a mixture of adventurous training (kayaking, caving, climbing and walking) and military training (blank firing and night-time exercises). There is also a summer RAF camp each year where there is an opportunity to fly for a number of days.
There are also opportunities for cadets to train with our affiliated military units, currently HMS Sultan, HMS Iron Duke, 45 Royal Marine Commando, The Royal Lancers, The Royal Anglian Regiment and RAF Wittering. The contingent also promotes overseas training.
