In their first year at Uppingham all pupils are made aware of the careers resources available to them. In the Lower Fifth, designated careers lessons take place in the Life Skills programme including an introduction to the Careers Library in the Thring Centre.
The Upper Fifth, following completion of a questionnaire and profile test*, will be interviewed by an adviser from COA (Cambridge Occupational Analysts). Pupils are given the opportunity to research career ideas/areas of interest highlighted by their report in the lead up to Sixth Form choices. Follow up discussions can take place with the School’s Careers Adviser if required.
In the Lower Sixth further exploration of career areas is encouraged. Throughout the year there are a number of careers activities, workshops and seminars that help initiate and complement the process of Higher Education applications, which will follow through to the Upper Sixth. This includes information on career taster days, CV preparation, interview technique and gap years. Pupils at any stage can also request an individual interview with our Careers Adviser.
Pupils are encouraged to initiate some work experience to check a career/course idea or to experience the world of work. Many choose the summer holidays after the Upper Fifth or Lower Sixth years as an ideal time for this. There is a growing network of OUs/parents who are willing to help pupils with their careers in terms of advice, guidance, mentoring or experience. Sixth Form pupils are involved in a management/leadership conference and careers conventions which are held annually.
The School has excellent links with the armed forces and regular presentations and interviews are held with the Careers Liaison Officers from the Army, Navy and RAF.
