Chemistry is the central science, lying between Physics and Biology and overlapping with both. Some understanding of chemistry is essential for a modern citizen to have an informed idea about what to eat, what their iPhone is made from, how old the Earth is, how our electricity is generated, and how to treat our illnesses. We seek to provide our pupils with a view of the world at the molecular level. Structures, models and analogies play a very large part in our teaching, and we are keen on exciting demonstrations and meticulous practical work, learning by doing and seeing reactions in the lab.
The IGCSE courses are rigorous, whether for separate Chemistry or Dual Award Science, and both provide an excellent support for A level Sciences. All years are supported by course-specific textbooks and excellent resources on the school intranet, accessible from anywhere in the world. We have written our own revision courses to support pupils as the exams approach, but up to that stage we teach well beyond the syllabuses in our aim to challenge, inspire and link chemistry to everyday life.
In the Sixth Form we have chosen the Pre-U course, which is very similar to the new A levels starting in 2015 but has the added advantage of being designed in collaboration with universities; equipping pupils with the skills required to make a success of their studies at university is a bonus of this well-respected course. Pre-U Chemistry encourages pupils to develop their understanding through the depth and rigour of the course, providing frameworks that allow pupils to tackle material they would otherwise consider beyond them; it is both empowering and engaging.
We have a strong record of RSC Olympiad, Cambridge Chemistry Challenge and Oxbridge success (to courses such as Natural Sciences and Veterinary Science at Cambridge, and Chemistry, Biochemistry, Material Science at Oxford) and a healthy uptake for Sixth Form studies. We take the Lower Sixth pupils to Oxford University each year for a day of practical work in their well-equipped teaching labs. We host the popular Upper Fifth (Year 11) Inter-school Chemistry Quiz competition and take teams to similar events at other schools.
