Housemasters and Housemistresses and tutors will support EAL pupils as they adapt to the different culture of an English boarding school, and will ensure that appropriate arrangements are made to allow EAL pupils to communicate with their homes.
Support for EAL pupils is provided where necessary to ensure that they are able to achieve their academic potential.
Pupils are only admitted to the School after testing in English, and candidates must demonstrate sufficient aptitude to enable them to access the academic curriculum and take part in the wider life of the school community.
In the Fourth Form “English Plus" is available as an alternative to French. Normally this is chosen by a few pupils from overseas whose first language is not English, although it has occasionally been taken by English-speaking pupils who are keen to have extra help with English.
Some pupils benefit from further tuition and assistance with particular tasks, for example coursework and university applications. Private tuition is usually available in these circumstances.
