The department offers the following qualifications:
Economics and Business are two very different subjects, with Business being firmly rooted in the everyday world of marketing, finance, commerce and business, where all sorts of firms are studied – from one-man small businesses to large multi-nationals like Microsoft and Ford - to establish what makes them succeed or fail.
Economics is far more abstract, based upon theories, concepts and ideas that can be used to explain the workings of society and the economy, both on an individual and national level.
Both subjects aim to get pupils to think critically about the world they inhabit and to make decisions and judgements based on all known parameters. Many of our pupils go on to university to study a diverse range of subjects related to Economics and Business – in fact, it is one of the most flexible areas of academic study and can be used to keep as many careers paths open as possible.
Each year our top two or three pupils go on to study some form of economics at Oxbridge. The department maintains strong links to the careers department; over the past few years, Sixth Formers have been awarded places on the prestigious work placement programmes with The Economist, PERA (Production Engineering Research Association) and Deloitte.
The department is keen to promote a real-world understanding of how business functions and tries to arrange at least one off-site visit per year; recent factory tours have included Toyota, Jaguar, Pedigree Masterfoods, Bentley, Aston Martin, JCB and Triumph Motorcycles. We also have a drop-in session on Wednesday afternoons for both subjects, designed to help pupils with existing work and to offer something more challenging for those applying for highly academic courses at university.
Both courses equip pupils very well for their next step into the working world. The department prides itself on coupling high levels of academic achievement with the development of skills that all universities and employers value.
