As a core subject, English underpins the achievements of pupils across the curriculum by developing their confidence and accuracy in the communication skills which will equip them for success in the wider world. Our aim is to encourage pupils to think analytically about their own writing, as well as to explore critical and imaginative responses to literary and non-fiction texts with discrimination. Located at the heart of the School, the teaching is delivered by a highly experienced department with wide ranging literary enthusiasms in a number of specialist fields, its public examination results being in the forefront of the School’s achievements at IGCSE and particularly A2 level. English also continues to be a popular choice for study at university, including Oxbridge.
In the Fourth Form (first year) the focus is upon developing an enjoyment of literature in its variety of forms and pupils will study a range of pieces, both traditional and contemporary, while the opportunity to pursue personal reading is nurtured through weekly reading sessions.
All pupils go on to take the separate subjects of IGCSE English Language and English Literature which not only challenge them to read with discernment but also to write effectively and fluently. Later, A2 English Literature, with its coursework components, give even greater scope for an independent choice and study of texts.
Throughout the year a number of activities contribute to the enrichment of the pupils’ experience with writing workshops, visiting poets, academics and professional theatre companies; there are also trips outside school to theatres in London, Stratford, Nottingham and Leicester as well as to other places of literary interest.
