Farleigh houses about 50 boys aged from 13 to 18. One of the two ‘Country Houses’ and situated five minutes walk away from both the main school facilities and the town it was much refurbished in 2011 and the boys now enjoy a TV and games room extension that also houses the house library, music practice room and small gym.
Accommodation for the boys is in a combination of year group dormitories and individual studies for the first two years and single bedsits for the top three year groups. The garden includes a football pitch and croquet lawn. Additionally there is also a separate common room area for the Upper Sixth.
The current Housemaster, James Birch, started teaching History at Uppingham in 2003 and was Resident Tutor in School House for a number of years before joining Farleigh as Senior Tutor. He was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham and studied History at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, subsequently qualifiying for his PGCE through Hughes Hall, Cambridge.
James is master i/c Athletics and also coaches Hockey, Basketball and Fives; in addition he runs the mediaeval section of the history department along with overseas trips and Oxbridge preparation; he is also i/c the Countryside Sports and Conservation Society.
James' wife Victoria and their two sons; Elias and Tristan, join him in the house. Victoria was born in South Africa; she trained as a lawyer before moving into teaching and has taught inter alia at the School.
