In 2006 I announced an ambitious master-plan for the western part of Uppingham’s campus, known as the Western Quad. Despite challenging times, the Sports Centre was completed on time and on budget in September 2010 and was officially opened by Lord Coe in March 2011. We are now ready to embark on the final phase of the plan with the creation of the Western Quad itself, incorporating a new Science Centre and extension to the Leonardo Art Centre. Our aim is to begin construction on-site in the Summer of 2012.
From the approach and entrance into the new Science building it will be clear that this is a very different environment from the functional and sterile atmosphere that can pervade many Science faculties. Within the ‘Destination Science’ building, I envision an attractive, open atrium which can house study and research spaces with resources for the entire Western Quad. There will be exhibition spaces displaying artefacts, scientific objects and artworks which spark the imagination and connect with work in the adjacent Leonardo Centre. The ethos of the new Science building will aim to open up Science to all, and to facilitate links between Science and the other academic and extracurricular pursuits. By creating a world class facility for teaching and learning, our aim is to inspire new generations of young people to see Science as an exciting and attractive subject to study. We want to deliver the best possible Science education.
In the last decade, due to the unstinting support of OUs, parents, staff and Trustees, more than £40m has been invested in Uppingham’s building programme, helping to transform the School and ensure the education we provide is of the highest standard.
