A well-planned and prepared gap year can be a very fulfilling and rewarding experience.
A gap year can in fact last for up to 15 months - from the June, when A levels are completed, through to the autumn of the following year, when university starts. Any length of time can provide students with a chance to find out the difference between studying and earning a living, a chance to travel around the world, acquire new skills, perfect or learn a foreign language and perhaps even help other people. It is an opportunity to travel and to do something constructive with their time (the latter being something universities and employers very much like to see).
For a successful ‘year off’ (and that is a misnomer!), it is vital that students thoroughly research all the options available to them. The options are endless: going on expedition or studying and working abroad; learning to be a ski instructor or trekking the Pyrenees; working in the UK or voluntary work abroad. Companies including Deloitte and KMPG offer very attractive paid work experience gap programmes.
In addition to the very comprehensive GAP websites available online, advice and help is also available at the School to all Sixth Form students wishing to pursue a gap year. Information can be found in the Careers and Higher Education Library upstairs in the Thring Centre.
Gap Year fairs are held annually at Uppingham with talks delivered by representatives from various organisations and OUs.
