Highfield is a boys’ house and one of the three ‘Hill Houses’. Located a brisk six minute walk from the centre of school it is home to 50 boys aged from 13-18.
Conveniently situated right next to the wide grassy expanse of the ‘Middle’ playing fields, the boys enjoy its proximity to these, the school astros and all weather tennis courts. Highfield was built in 1863 but has been extended since, and in 2010 benefited from a major internal refurbishment programme. For the first two years (Fourth Form and Lower Fifth) each boy is accommodated in small dormitories of two or four and each also has his own study and networked computer. For the final three years every boy is provided with a single bedsit. The House is also well equipped with several communal areas for the boys, a games room, TV rooms, common room areas and cooking facilities for the boys' own use.
The Housemaster, Richard Hegarty, has been at Uppingham for eleven years; in the course of this time he has been Resident Tutor in Fircroft for nearly ten years, Head of Philosophy and Religious Studies since 2010 and in 2014-16 he ran the Oxbridge programme. Outside the classroom Richard is also an enthusiastic sports coach in rugby, hockey and cricket and he has also supervised pupils for the Extended Project Qualification and Oxbridge preparation.
Prior to Uppingham, Richard was educated at St Edward’s, Oxford and Jesus College, Cambridge where he read Theology and represented the University at rugby. He returned to St Edward’s for a year as part of their graduate programme before joining Uppingham in 2004.
