The History Department is located at the centre of the School. It is a department with a strong academic record and we encourage the pupils to stretch themselves. History is a consistently popular optional subject, attracting highly committed pupils. The department emphasises independent research and learning, and pupils have access to an extensive library, including the latest works by key authors, and can follow up their own interests. History is a very popular choice for higher education and we support a number of ambitious university candidates every year.
The History Department teaches all the first year (Fourth Form) pupils a broad sweep of the transition from the 19th to the 20th Century as an introduction to the skills and understanding required for IGCSE.
The syllabus for IGCSE covers Russia, Germany and International Relations up to 1990. At AS and A2 we teach Medieval, Early Modern and Modern topics covering aspects of British, European and Global History and the pupils can choose which strand they would like to follow. The A2 coursework offers the opportunity for an independent research project based on a pupil’s choice of topic and question.
The department runs some fantastic trips. The annual Berlin trip, which complements the IGCSE course, looks at the past and present of Germany through with a packed itinerary incorporating not only historical but also cultural places of interest. We also have an active Junior History Society and senior seminar programme.
