In a school that prides itself upon the education of the whole person, you would expect to find a deep level of pastoral care at Uppingham and we feel that this is just what we have. At one level it simply refers to the care we take of the overall aspect of your child’s education. It is medical provision, caring Housemasters and Housemistresses, good food, understanding when things go wrong, education by means of commitment to a set of values, and so on.
At another level altogether, it is that sometimes intangible aspect of an ‘all round’ education and one which is more important in a boarding environment than in a day school where most pastoral care continues to be provided by parents when the child is at home. It is the aspect of the pupils’ education that will help them to learn to face the world with confidence and self-esteem and an understanding of how to treat others with respect and courtesy.
With this complicated beast in mind, we take great care of our pastoral provision and the disciplinary structures that support it: the two must be mutually supportive and lie at the heart of the education we provide. It is a total commitment to pastoral education in its fullest sense that we believe makes Uppingham a very special boarding school.
Our system is one based upon the degree and quality of contact, both formal and informal, between pupil and staff. The pupils have a wide range of adults they can approach and who will have concern for them. Some pupils will find they talk most easily to Matron, others to their Housemaster or Housemistress, Tutor or other House Staff. Some prefer to talk to the Chaplain, or a Counsellor if they are worried about something in particular, because they find them particularly accessible. We like to think that it would be hard for a pupil not to find someone he or she finds it easy to talk to, and the relationship with the Housemaster / Housemistress is a particularly significant one.
The School has a fully-staffed health centre and the School Doctors are long associated with the School. Pupils can be referred to a specialist Consultant. A number of private practitioners work within the Health Centre and are available to see pupils if needed e.g. Physiotherapist, Osteopath, Educational Phychologist. The School also has trained counsellors (both dependent and independent) to whom pupils are free to go and chat in absolute confidence.
Everyday discipline comes within the remit of the Housemasters/Housemistresses: serious breaches are dealt with by the Deputy Head or Headmaster and always in consultation with the Housemasters/ Housemistresses.
