Accommodated close to the centre of the main school, the Learning Support Department supports pupils from all years. The aim of the department is to help pupils to achieve to the best of their ability in mainstream subjects and to equip them with learning strategies for life.
Learning difficulties are mostly of a mild to moderate nature and the majority of pupils succeed up to A2 level examinations and then continue on to university. In the Fourth Form support is offered in small groups and thereafter in an individual lesson or in groups of two. Support is organised in response to need and this is flexible throughout a pupil’s time at Uppingham. Lessons are arranged within the timetable but no core subjects are missed. Lessons are charged as an extra after consultation with Housemasters/Housemistresses and parents. Regularly updated supporting notes for each pupil receiving Learning Support are available to all academic staff. Pupils with the appropriate certification are allowed exam access arrangements such as extra time.
The Learning Support Department would aim to support any pupil with a statement of special educational needs, both academically and in terms of their behaviour and welfare, in addition to the support provided by Housemasters or Housemistresses, tutors and outside bodies where appropriate.
