The Physical Education (PE) Department is situated in the superb new Uppingham School Sports Centre (USSC) which opened in September 2010. The department teaches a wide range of sports in the Lower School curriculum lessons where we aim to nurture the physical, social, emotional and moral development of all pupils. From basic skills and tacticsto advanced play, we aim to challenge, stretch and excite boys and girls about, and through, sport, and provide them with a platform from which they can enjoy and benefit from a lifetime of sport. Sports taught within the curriculum cover individual, team and creative sports.
The department teaches all Fourth Form (first year) and Lower Fifth pupils, ensuring that each one receives a superb grounding in skills, tactics and fitness from fully qualified staff across the range of sports. A level PE is taught in the Sixth Form, focusing on the study of sport through a number of disciplines such as sports science, including anatomy and physiology, psychology, socio-cultural studies and personal performance. It is well suited to an enthusiastic group of passionate pupils who want to further their understanding and appreciation of the world of sport. Qualifications lead to a variety of Higher Education courses within the spheres of coaching, leisure, sports science, management and education.
The PE department is also heavily involved in running and coaching sports throughout the year within the School’s sports programme. To supplement the formal coaching that is done in these sessions staff also run a variety of clubs open to all pupils in sports such as trampolining, gymnastics, squash, table tennis, golf and handball.
