Uppingham School Rugby Club’s vision is to create an environment where success is inevitable. We support the core values of Rugby Union (Teamwork – Respect – Enjoyment – Discipline – Sportsmanship) at Uppingham and as a rugby club we also have our own core values: we always back ourselves, we respect ourselves and others, we pack our own parachute (i.e. we take responsibility), we have a white line mentality (i.e. we are fully committed in training and playing) and we enjoy the experience.
We aim to develop leaders and decision-makers, and to promote game understanding, skill acquisition and enjoyment through active, purposeful and games-based practice. We strive to develop the individual player by focussing on the process not the outcome in a positive, interactive and challenging environment. Our coaching philosophy is player-centred, values-based, development-driven and competition-supported.
Rugby is played in the autumn term except for the U14s who play in the spring term. The Rugby Club can put out up to 13 teams in the autumn term and 4 teams in the spring term. In addition rugby 7s is played at U18 and U16 level in the spring term.
Outside of school our players play representative rugby for the county, regional and even national teams. We enjoy close links with Leicester Tigers and Northampton Saints, and we have a number of players who are on their Developing Players Programmes. We also invite professional and international players to take training sessions.
Paul Westgate is an RFU Level 5 Elite Rugby Coach and a qualified RFU Trainer, Coach Educator and Mentor. In January 2012 he was named RFU Coach Educator of The Year at the RFU National Awards for Coaching Excellence. He is currently Head Coach of the Midlands 18s and has significant experience of leading, managing and coaching high performance rugby teams.
In total 24 members of staff are involved in the coaching of rugby and most have an RFU coaching qualification. Uppingham School is an accredited Coach Education Centre for the RFU and there are regular coach development courses and INSET training.
The Leicester Playing Fields are dedicated to rugby in the autumn and spring terms, with three full size pitches located alongside the USSC facilities.
Further rugby pitches are located at the Middle Playing Fields, where rugby is played alongside the other field sports on offer, dependent on the term.
In addition to the weekly and traditional block fixtures against other schools, the 1st XV and U15 teams participate in national competitions such as the NatWest Schools Cup and the National Schools 7s. The U16 team participates in the County Cup.
Within the School there are some keenly contested inter-house competitions at senior, junior and U14 level.
