Uppingham School is a vibrant community offering a huge range of events and activities for pupils to participate in. The social activities on offer are many and varied, ranging from music concerts, visits to the theatre and cinema to black tie dinners and House based events. There are also informal year group social events such as BBQs, (rock) band concerts or DJ nights.
Most Houses host an annual House Concert; these are informal music events to which both parents and a variety of staff are invited. Many also host dinners for different year groups, some of which are black tie events, some more informal like the Burns Night suppers held in many of the Houses this year.
In a boarding school it is particularly important to provide additional activities at weekends and a pupil new to the School would expect to be engaged in a variety of House and School based activities, both on campus and off, and these range from the Fourth Form Masterchef Competition to trips to paintballing, bowling, laser quest, sports fixtures, the cinema and punting. Inter-House competitions in sport, music, debating and others give every pupil the opportunity to challenge themselves and enjoy being part of the wider community of the School.
As pupils progress to the Sixth Form there are even more opportunities to socialise. Some of the most popular events in the Sixth Form social calendar are the ‘Bops’. ‘Bops’ are held in the Williams Studio Theatre and pupils enjoy a buffet supper, listen to music/DJs or dance.
The Thring Centre is the Sixth Form Social Centre, which is open to all Sixth Formers on several evenings throughout the week and to the Upper Fifth on Saturday evenings. Activities organised by the Chairman and House Representatives include regular discos, seasonal themed evenings, school band concerts and films on a cinema screen. The “Thring”, as it is affectionately known, offers a meeting place out of Houses and has a sitting room, pool table, Freeview television sets, Wii, table tennis and a garden where pupils can sit, chat or play pétanque.
For the Upper Sixth only there is the Sixth Form Club which is open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.
Term ends on a Friday morning in the summer and the evening that follows is a dedicated time for the Upper Sixth Leavers to get together with their friends, parents and staff at the annual Leavers' Ball. Some are themed, some are not, but whatever the approach it is a night to remember and a super way for pupils to mark the end of their time at the School.
