The Theatre Studies Department is accommodated within Uppingham’s two theatre venues. Uppingham Theatre is a well established, fully equipped, 300-seat theatre which regularly stages school and professional productions. It plays a significant role in the cultural life of both the School and the wider community. The Williams Studio opened in November 2006 as part of Uppingham’s commitment to the performing arts. It consists of a foyer, two new drama classrooms, a well resourced workshop and a state-of-the-art drama studio designed to provide a flexible performance space that complements the larger proscenium-arch theatre next door.
The Theatre Studies Department runs successful courses at GCSE, AS and A level. In our teaching we aim to encourage pupils to develop their interest and enjoyment of drama and theatre through practical activity that complements and informs their written work. This approach is supported by regular theatre trips and access to a range of professional theatre workshops. In the practical coursework at both GCSE (60%) and A level (40%) there are opportunities to be assessed as an actor, lighting /sound technician or costume/set designer. Theatre Studies A level is successfully used for university entrance when applying for a wide range of subjects predominantly, although not exclusively, in the humanities and the arts.
The department also encourages and facilitates a really busy extra-curricular programme. Large numbers of pupils audition and take part in the main school productions, with a significant number also volunteering to help behind the scenes or in Front of House roles. Pupils can also opt to take LAMDA lessons, join the Drama Society or audition for the annual Sixth Form Production. There are also a number of House plays hosted within the department.
