The Uppingham School Sports Centre (USSC) was officially opened in March 2011 by Lord Coe, the Chairman of the organising committee for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and four times Olympic medal winner.
The environmentally-friendly centre offers facilities of a ‘county’ level and is also open for use by the local community – residents, sports clubs and other schools. Although designed as a dual-use facility, the Sports Centre is reserved for exclusive use by School pupils on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday games afternoons. It also houses the PE department classrooms and offices.
The sports hall can be adapted to accommodate badminton, basketball, 5-a-side football, indoor hockey and tennis, netball, table tennis and volleyball. There are also 5 cricket nets, plus bowling machines.
The six-lane 25m swimming pool goes to a depth of 2m, and is fitted with starting blocks and a full timing system. Furthermore the area has acoustic panelling and a perforated ceiling to reduce echo and reverberation. The activities that can take place in the pool include – swimming, water polo, canoeing, scuba diving, life-saving and hydro-therapy. Pupils can take NPLQ life-saving course, which means that they can leave with the same professional lifeguard qualification our staff have.
The natural light-filled gymnasium has a semi-sprung Junckers floor and is a wonderful space for fencing (three pistes), trampolining (two training rigs for coaching) and other traditional gymnastic disciplines (ropes, beams, boxes, horses etc).
There are three glass-backed squash courts within the USSC (with a further three housed nearby). Each has a juliet balcony for use by judges.
The 53-station fitness studio caters for all ages and abilities, with cardiovascular, free weights, resistance weights, Smiths machine and cable kit equipment. There is something for everybody. It is always staffed by REPS (register of exercise qualified professionals) qualified member of staff and they assist the pupils and members, and support the School’s staff in their classes with the pupils.
Like the gymnasium the dance studios all have semi-sprung Junckers floor and are mainly used by pupils for aerobics and dance classes. Traditional ballet is also taught as a peripatetic subject.
The Archery corridor houses two bosses (targets) and is used by the teams and members of the Archery Club.
Used mainly for post-match hospitality the suite is a flexible space with a retractable wall which can seat up to 220 people (292 standing).
We appreciate all the support that Uppingham, and visiting parents, give on match days and all are welcome to have refreshments in the Hospitality Suite after matches.
There are two separate sets of changing rooms. One set of changing rooms is reserved for use by pupils only, and the other changing rooms are for public use. Entrance to the pupils’ changing rooms is controlled by secure digilock keypads, and is separated from the public changing rooms by the reception desk to ensure there is no public access.
