West Bank was built in 1866 by Howard Candler, an inspirational mathematician and writer, whilst he was a Housemaster at Uppingham with Edward Thring. Extended over the last 100 years, the House is now home to 55 boys aged between 13 and 18.
One of the four ‘Town Houses’ the House is located near to the sports centre (USSC), theatre and science school, as well as the Middle and Leicester Playing Fields. For the first two years, pupils sleep in either a two or four-bed dormitory and work from their own individual study; in the GCSE year and in the Sixth Form, pupils have their own bedsit. The boys make good use of the gardens, games rooms and basketball court; in 2012 the dining, music and games rooms were extended.
David Bartley is the Housemaster of West Bank. David joined Uppingham School in 2016 after 10 years at The Duke of York’s Royal Military School, Dover where he ran a senior boys’ boarding house, taught Physical Education, coached the 1st XV and was master i/c senior boys’ athletics.
Prior to teaching, David read Sports Science and Physical Education at Loughborough University before joining the Royal Marines. He enjoyed five years as an Officer, deploying to Northern Ireland and Sierra Leone in support of security services. David also represented the Royal Marines and Navy 1st XV at rugby, as well as in swimming and water polo.
David is a 2nd XV rugby coach at Uppingham and coaches Athletics in the summer term. He is also a member of the CCF staff.
David’s wife Annabel is a full-time mother to their young sons, Hugo and Milo. Prior to this she was a Housemistress in a Junior boys’ house and taught Drama. Annabel will be an active member of West Bank.
