Community Service
Community Service has been an alternative to the CCF for about thirty years and is offered in the Upper Fifth and Lower Sixth. Activities are run on Monday afternoons at the same time as the CCF, except for one or two smaller options. The aim of the organisation is to involve our students in activities outside the School, to encourage them to meet people who live in often very different circumstances from their own, to make them aware of the needs and qualities of others and to encourage them to share their own qualities with others. The options are not always easy, some are indeed very challenging, but we never ask anyone to persevere with an activity with which he or she genuinely cannot cope. Options are chosen after a meeting at the beginning of the School year and include, for example, visiting elderly people, working in local schools and helping with Riding for the Disabled. One of the strengths and positive aspects of the organisation is that it is run jointly by a committee of boys and girls, and members of staff. The committee has to work together, organise the major events such as Field Days and parties, and work alongside staff in the day-to-day running. They have to display qualities of care, true commitment and leadership in the organisation and supervision of the activities. |
