Sport

Uppingham caters for all levels of ability in as many sports as possible.  The School encourages boys and girls to take part in and enjoy sports and games.  Competitions are organised at School and House level in all age groups so that team spirit is developed. Tours are organised regularly to Southern and Northern hemisphere countries and this helps to widen the pupils' awareness, not only of how games are played in these countries, but also of family life and attitudes to world affairs.

The School is extremely well equipped with playing fields totalling 65 acres, and a Sports Centre which includes a sports hall, gymnasium, weights room, swimming and diving pools. There are two Astroturf hockey surfaces and a separate all-weather pitch, plus Savannah and hard court tennis courts, squash courts, fives courts and a shooting range.

First year boys play hockey in the Autumn term, rugby football in the Spring term and select from cricket, athletics and tennis in the Summer.  The first year boys benefit from having the senior coaches looking after them when they are new to the School.  In the following years, the boys play rugby football in the Autumn and hockey in the Spring. The girls play hockey and lacrosse in the Autumn, and netball and lacrosse in the Spring.  In the Summer the boys play cricket, tennis and athletics as major sports whereas the girls' major Summer sports are tennis and athletics.  Students who wish to participate in other sports may choose from a wide variety of options such as: squash; badminton; swimming; basketball; cross-country; shooting; fencing; dance; aerobics; sailing and golf. 

Representing the School in a number of sports is an important part of the School's ethos, and Uppingham is very proud of its success on the sports field, particularly in the major sports.  The highly qualified and experienced staff help all pupils to take full advantage of the facilities and to develop their interests and abilities.  The School also employs numerous professional specialist coaches across its sports providing opportunities for the advancement of all abilities as well as the nurturing of elite sporting athletes.  Above all, everyone contributes and school-wide support for Uppingham teams makes sport at Uppingham very special.
