Careers AdvicePupils in their first year at Uppingham are introduced to the careers education programme. In the Lower Fifth, designated careers lessons take place in the Lifeskills programme including an introduction to the Careers Library in the Thring Centre (including IT and on-line resources). Many work-related learning themes are also covered, including CV preparation and interview skills. In the Lower Sixth further exploration of career areas is encouraged. Throughout the year there are a number of careers activities, workshops and seminars that help initiate and complement the process of Higher Education applications, which will follow through to the Upper Sixth. This includes information on career taster days and gap years. Pupils, at any stage, can also request an individual interview with our careers adviser. Pupils are encouraged to initiate some work experience to check a career / course idea or to experience the world of work. Many choose the summer holidays after the Upper Fifth or Lower Sixth years as an ideal time for this. There is a growing network of Ous/parents who are willing to help pupils with their careers in terms of advice, guidance, mentoring or experience. After the AS exams pupils will be involved in a management/leadership conference and careers conventions are held biennially. The school has excellent links with the armed forces and regular presentations and interviews are held with the Careers Liaison Officers from the Army, Navy and RAF. The School's careers education provision is reviewed regularly and, the Department works closely with COA www.coa.co.uk, and ISCO (Inspiring Futures) in order to give the best advice to pupils. Please follow the link to recommended work shadowing courses offered by Inspiring Futures www.ehcourses.inspiringfutures.org.uk. Future Doctors is another organisation that the School is affiliated with. They specialise in helping students in their preparation for the highly competitive Medical School application process with dedicated interview skills, UKCAT and BMAT guidance. They host weekend courses at Imperial and UCL, organise work experience programs and have an extensive online resource dedicated to getting you into Medical School.
