Headmaster’s Introduction

To start with, it's a boarding school. That means that from breakfast to bedtime every day there are things to do and people to do them with. Next, it's in the heart of England. Safely integrated into a small market town in England's smallest county, Rutland, Uppingham has over 750 pupils who come from all over the country. In a school of this size it's possible for nearly everybody to know nearly everybody else. And third: Uppingham is the school which invented All-Round Education.

We believe that schools exist in order to develop the confidence and self-esteem of pupils by encouraging them to achieve something special in a whole range of arenas. They learn a lot: much of it is academic, but lessons for life are there to be learnt as well.

Descriptions of schools can easily be bland and unilluminating. I could tell you that the school has fifteen separate boarding houses, each with its own dining room. That it has 120 acres of land and wonderful facilities for theatre and games and art. That the whole site is networked for ICT and that there are 1800 access points to the network for pupils and for staff. That it has an outstanding reputation in music, and state-of-the-art facilities for music making. But what captivates the ordinary visitor to the school is the quality of the atmosphere.

Children learn best in a warm and friendly environment and we are very proud of the feelings of warmth and care and enthusiasm generated by our staff and our pupils. Uppingham feels like a school in which children will be happy, will be encouraged to do well, and will learn skills for life. Living in a proper boarding school - and if you want proper boarding, do choose a school which does it properly and where most of the pupils are boarders - you learn to get on with a variety of people. Our system of eating in houses reinforces the close feelings of friendship, which exist among boys and girls in their respective houses. But it's easy for me to say all this: I am, after all, only the Headmaster. The best proof of the warmth and welcome and achievement of Uppingham is to come and to sample it for yourself.
