U14 Girls' Triumph
UPPINGHAM School’s under-14 girls are Leicestershire champions after triumphing in the one-day annual hockey tournament in Leicester. In torrential rain and high winds at St Margaret’s Pasture, they saw off the challenge of 12 other teams to win the honour of representing the county in the Midlands finals later this month. It is the first time that the Uppingham under-14s have won the annual tournament since the school became fully co-educational four years ago. So it is appropriate that the team coach is Mrs Liz Worthington, who is also housemistress of Samworths’ house which was the first to be opened to accommodate the younger girls. Uppingham beat Leicester Grammar 1-0 in the final after a penalty corner, having enjoyed the greater percentage of attacking play through the match. The team had relied on penalty flicks to win their semi final against Loughborough High School, while Leicester Grammar scored a late goal to defeat Oakham in the other semi. Mrs Worthington said: “This is a splendid triumph for our first year girls who worked exceptionally hard at their game in often atrocious weather conditions. The final produced some quality hockey. It was an exciting game with both teams showing real flair and excellent passing skills.” Uppingham will now represent Leicestershire at the Midlands tournament on Sunday 27 November 2005 at the Coventry Schools pitches, Norman Place Road, Coventry. The victorious Uppingham squad was: Alice Archer; Nemmy Johnston; Lucy Spencer-Ashworth; Izzy Wilkinson (captain); Becky Wilson; Tacita Brown; Millie McWhirter; Becky Timothy; Sophie Jackson; Millie Hollington; Laura Hollingsworth; Lucy Ives; Pippa Howell; Rachael Callaghan; Livvy Harman. Results in group matches: Our Ladies Convent - won 2-0; Ratcliffe - won 1-0; Leicester Grammar School - drew 0-0; Kibworth - won 3-0; Mount Grace - won 2-0; Welland Park - won 4-0. Semi-final: Loughborough High School - drew 1-1 (penalty flicks - won 2-1). Final: Leicester Grammar School - won 1-0. Goal scorers: Millie McWhirter - 4; Millie Hollington, Pippa Howell, Izzy Wilkinson, Rachael Callaghan - 2 each; Tacita Brown, Lucy Ives - 1 each. On the domestic inter-school front, the record of the same Uppingham team is currently: played 9, won 5, lost 2, drawn 2, with 4 matches still to go. |
