Music
Opportunities for making music at Uppingham are unrivalled. Since appointing the UK’s first Director of Music in 1865 the School’s music has had a distinguished reputation. Alumni include Andrew Kennedy, Toby Spence, E J Moeran, Douglas Guest, Ben Zander, Charlie Simpson, Peter Cropper, Harry Judd, Robin Blaze and Elizabeth Atherton. Many of the School’s outstanding instrumental staff are drawn from professional orchestras and conservatoires. Tuition is available on all orchestral instruments and bagpipes, Alexander Technique, singing and guitar. Ensemble work is ambitious; pupils may perform in orchestras, concert bands, jazz bands and five choirs. A weekly programme of chamber music coaching is available alongside an outstanding series of masterclasses*. The Chapel Choir has recently returned from a tour of Hong Kong and China, and the Symphony Orchestra will perform in Paris in July 2008. An additional third music school was opened in February 2007 and a new Chapel organ was unveiled in September 2007. The Paul David Music School offers state-of-the-art facilities, a recital room, recording studios and brings the total of practice rooms to 60. The School continues a tradition of success in Oxbridge choral and organ trials. *2007-8 Stephen Cleobury, Nicholas Daniel, David Lowe, Andrew Kennedy Gareth Davies, The Swingle Singers and John Metcalfe. |
