Introduction

The central element in the life of Uppingham School is the classroom curriculum, but, unlike many other schools, Uppingham focuses unashamedly on the "total curriculum".

This is our term for the total educational experience of being a pupil at a genuinely seven-day-a-week boarding school. Our goal has been, for at least a century and a half, to focus upon the development of the "whole person".

Our classroom curriculum is sufficiently challenging for us to need to insist on a certain level of academic ability in the pupils we take, but the emphasis is upon identifying and bringing out the strengths of all pupils - in whichever field they may shine - and in offering breadth of opportunity.

This philosophy is applied in the classroom curriculum as well as in the many facets of school life. For instance, we offer an unusually wide range of subjects - particularly in the Sixth Form, where there is a choice between as many as 28 subjects. We attempt, as far as we can, to give pupils complete freedom in their choice of subjects.

The school prides itself upon high-quality pastoral care - and this includes optimising academic excellence and achievement. Class sizes are small, the classroom culture is relaxed and open, and the support given to the pupils is extensive.
