“To be the best boarding school in England, with legendary excellence in music
and a deserved reputation for individual pastoral care and for all-round education.”

General Information
Uppingham School, founded in 1584, is one of Britain’s leading co-educational independent boarding schools.  Its 770 pupils are accommodated in 15 boarding houses, taught by two dozen academic departments, and participate in numerous extra-curricular activities such as sports, music, drama, and expeditions.  The academic structure, which includes marketing and admissions, is supported by departments responsible for maintenance of buildings and grounds, finance, personnel, catering, the school-wide IT network, domestic affairs, health care, sports centre, and the School’s trading subsidiary.

In term-time (about 32 weeks each year) the School operates seven days a week. In the summer months it operates a commercial summer school.  It has about 480 full-time and part-time employees, among whom the teachers report to the Headmaster and the support staff to the Bursar.  The School is a Registered Charity and governed by 20 voluntary Trustees, who are responsible for guiding the Headmaster and Bursar in matters of governance and strategy, and ultimately for the health and safety of pupils, employees, and visitors.  The School’s estate includes 120 acres of non-contiguous grounds and 75 buildings, mostly large, many old, and 23 with listed status.

*Emails from the School
From time to time, some correspondents report problems communicating with the School by email.  Often this problem is caused by email providers who incorrectly mark Uppingham email as spam, thus potentially not being delivered to you.  Our IT Department works with email providers to resolve these issues, but often the solution is to check your own email accounts for any spam rules, ensuring that any email from Uppingham School is released.  Your email provider will be able to give further advice if required.
