Athletics is a major sport for both boys and girls during the summer term. Competitive multi-school meetings provide the focus for the season and as many pupils as possible are encouraged to aim for inclusion in their relevant age group team. Our objective is to encourage all those participating to push themselves and to develop as athletes. Individuals may specialise in one particular event and really concentrate in on this, or may look to take part in a wide range of disciplines. There is a universal focus for all athletes on correct, effective training and core conditioning. Pupils will, of course, have their own targets across the season by looking to improve on their personal best performances, but there is also an emphasis placed on the collective team-based nature of competitions. The School puts out teams across the age range of pupils. The usual format for meetings is Seniors (Upper and Lower Sixth), Intermediates (Upper and Lower Fifth) and Juniors (Fourth Form). Individuals are normally allowed only to compete in two track and one field event, or vice versa, plus relay.
In total 12 members of staff are involved in the coaching of athletics, all of whom play a role in team management, but who also have expertise in one or more of the specific athletic disciplines. External coaches and professional athletes are also invited in on occasion to take training sessions.
Training takes place on the Leicester playing fields, where there is a 400m running rack, discus cage, shot circle and long/triple jump pits with all-weather run-ups.
Uppingham competes in block fixtures which range in size from triangular meets upwards. Opposition varies, but includes a very wide range of schools from throughout the country.
Relay teams also compete in specific events including the Achilles Relays, a national schools' competition held at Iffley Road in Oxford. Many athletes qualify to take part in the Leicestershire and Rutland County Championships each year, with a number going on to represent the county at district and national schools' competitions.
