Hockey is played in the spring term, except for the U14s who play in the autumn term, with up to 12 teams representing the School in the spring, and six in the autumn. The sporting programme allows all new boys to play the game for one term in their first year and then pupils have the option to play the game in their remaining four years at the School.
All players have the opportunity to represent the School in inter-school matches, their house in inter-house matches, or simply get involved with the sport as a means of recreation. A number of players go on to play representative hockey at county, regional or national level.
During the course of a busy spring term the teams will play up to 15 opposition schools, such as Oundle, Stowe, Rugby, Bedford, Repton, Trent College, Bromsgrove and Oakham.
Elite players are supported with entry into the England Hockey 'Single System', where they continue to develop their skills in local regional performance academies (JDC, JAC, JRPC, Futures Cup).
Hockey tours abroad take place on average every three years; the most recent was to Germany and Holland in October 2013, where the 1st XI team were unbeaten in all of their fixtures.
Between 25-30 members of staff are involved in delivering the game of hockey to Uppinghamians each year, including five specialist coaches and a number of support coaches. In addition to our full-time hockey professional, the School also employs a professional goalkeeping coach and umpiring assistant.
In order to refresh and build new ideas in to the coaching programme, annual INSET training for coaching staff is used each year. There is an emphasis on physical fitness and core skills right from the outset, with competition phases becoming more important in the older age groups.
Training sessions take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, with one session each week dedicated to development training for the most able young players from each year group.
The U18, U16 teams participate in county, regional and national competitions and currently the U14As are the county hockey champions, after winning all of their matches against their opponents. Much of this success is testament to coaching staff’s ability to develop players from an early age and maintain player interest over the years that follow, as well as the strength of sport at Uppingham.
