Johnson’s is a house for 60 girls aged between 13 and 18. Originally built in 1986 with the growth in Sixth Form provision for girls, the House was significantly extended and refurbished in 2011 and now offers accommodation to girls from 13. The new extension ensures that the House offers a combination of dormitories for the Fourth Form, shared bedrooms for the Lower Fifth and single bedsits for girls in the Upper Fifth and Sixth Form, whilst the ground floor offers a magnificent new dining room, common rooms, a TV room and music practice facilities. The House is named after the founder of Uppingham School, Archdeacon Robert Johnson and surrounded by gardens. Situated on the west side of Uppingham, overlooking the Sports Centre (USSC) it is conveniently located next to the netball and tennis courts, the sports centre and the facilities of the Western Campus.
The Housemistress, Lesley Allen studied for a degree in Computer Science in Leicester and worked for British Aerospace before completing her teaching qualification at Nottingham. She joined Uppingham in 1997 and teaches Mathematics and ICT. Lesley is married to Steve Allen, former Housemaster of West Bank. Having run a boys’ boarding house prior to moving to Johnson’s in 2009, Steve now lives in Johnson’s with Lesley, and plays a major part in the House. They have four grown up children.
Outside of the classroom, and Johnson’s, Lesley is involved in the army section of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), coaching hockey, netball and tennis and she enjoys reading, badminton and cooking.
