Ours is a welcoming and accessible community, with compassionate learning and pastoral support to ensure we meet the individual needs of every pupil.

We recognise that every pupil has differing needs, abilities and preferences – and that these will change over time and in different circumstances. That’s why every member of staff, from housemasters and housemistresses to teachers and matrons, is focused on creating a caring environment that fulfils the needs of each individual.

Our school community is welcoming and accessible to all pupils. We provide effective and compassionate support for pupils with identified special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), as well as those who may be experiencing temporary difficulties – whether physical or emotional.

Our Learning Support department has specific expertise in helping pupils with a whole range of special educational needs, in the context of a mainstream, academically selective school. These specialists work closely with both academic and pastoral staff to ensure we monitor and manage the progress of all pupils in our care, whatever their individual requirements and including any pupil with an EHC plan.

Every member of staff has a genuine desire to see every pupil achieve his or her best.

That commitment is manifested in ongoing training and development, which ensures our skills and expertise are constantly updated. By working as a team, we help pupils to enjoy the wealth of extra-curricular and enrichment opportunities on offer.

The Learning Support team welcomes the participation of parents, and pupils themselves, in developing the most effective individual support programmes.

EAL

Housemasters and Housemistresses and tutors will support EAL pupils as they adapt to the different culture of an English boarding school, and will ensure that appropriate arrangements are made to allow EAL pupils to communicate with their homes.

Support for EAL pupils is provided to enable them to achieve their academic potential.

Pupils are only admitted to the School after testing in English, and candidates must demonstrate sufficient aptitude to enable them to access the academic curriculum and take part in the wider life of the school community.

In the Fourth Form “English Plus" is available as an alternative to a modern language. Normally this is chosen by pupils whose first language is not English who need to improve their level of written English in their first year at Uppingham in order to be able to fulfil their potential in their academic studies.

Some pupils in subsequent years may still require further tuition or assistance with particular tasks, and individual support is usually available on a private tuition basis in these circumstances.
