The Director of Libraries and Learning Resources has overall responsibility for information and research resources for the academic community of teachers and pupils, in both traditional and online formats.
The School Library is housed in one of the oldest school buildings dating from 1593. It covers all areas of knowledge but specifically aims to reflect those subjects taught in the classroom. It supplements the already extensive academic departmental libraries and also holds a large modern fiction collection.
The Library contains some 15,000 volumes. It is used as a working area for private study during the School day and is open at all other times for reference, study, borrowing and recreational reading. It maintains a large collection of periodical literature, subscribing to some 50 titles as well as online information databases. Research skills for independent learning are taught by our professional Librarians in conjunction with teaching staff as part of the current EPQ curriculum. ‘Smart’ searching techniques for lower years on online research in the information age, is also taught by Librarians as part of the Lifeskills curriculum. Many events are held in the beautiful surroundings of the Library throughout the year to support and encourage reading for pleasure and lifelong learning.
Every academic department has its own library collection, and a number of department libraries are also available as venues for pupils to use for private study work.
The Cavell Centre, which is located in the award winning Science Centre in the Western Quad, provides a bespoke science collection and a working area where pupils can pursue independent online research, work in small collaborative groups and spend private study periods.
