Meadhurst is a boys’ house that is home to 50 boys aged from 13 to 18. One of the two ‘Country Houses’ it has its own football field and two grass tennis courts, while still remaining within a few minutes walk of all the main School facilities.
Much extended and refurbished in recent years, it now offers accommodation in a combination of dormitories and studies for the first two years and single bed-sits from the Upper Fifth onwards.
The Housemaster, Sam Dewhurst, was educated at Rugby School and studied Classics at Durham University before entering Sandhurst and serving for three years as a cavalry officer with The Queen’s Own Hussars in Germany, Cyprus and Ireland. After leaving the Army, he then worked in Executive Search in the City, prior to studying for his PGCE at King’s College, London, and entering the teaching profession. He started at Uppingham School as a Classics master in 2002 and after four years tutoring in Fircroft, took over Meadhurst in 2006, where he now lives with his wife Juliet and three sons, Fergus, Oscar and Wilfred.
Outside his teaching and pastoral activities, Sam is involved in the Combined Cadet Force, clay pigeon shooting and bridge, helps to coach badminton and tennis and enjoys skiing, golf, scuba diving and shooting.
