In a world which grows ever closer together through technology, media, globalisation and ease of international travel, languages are essential to facilitate communication through cultural understanding. French, German, Spanish and Mandarin are taught in the purpose-built Languages Centre by staff with international experience, who make use of cutting-edge technology to promote cultural awareness and communication skills, which are life skills and transferable to many other aspects of a pupil’s development. A candidate with a second language will always be attractive to employers, and in some managerial and law careers it may well become a prerequisite for an interview. Uppingham pupils who study modern languages regularly find their way not only to Oxford, Cambridge and other prestigious universities, but also go on to study and work abroad.
Almost all Fourth Form (first year) pupils study French and one or two others from the range of German, Mandarin and Spanish. One, two or in some cases three modern languages are then taken for IGCSE.
At AS and A2 level the same choice remains, and half of the pupils studying languages take more than one language at AS level. All Sixth Form linguists benefit from conversation classes in groups of two with our language assistants, geared towards the honing of oral skills. In many cases A level leads on to higher education, where languages can be studied alongside a huge range of other subjects or as pure language degrees.
In French the DELF-DALF Diploma and in Spanish the DELE Diploma series stretch the best pupils at IGCSE, AS and A2 level. Databases, AV, ICT and the departmental library are available to pupils in the Sixth Form in their preparation for Oxbridge or to develop their individual language skills in topic areas of interest to them. The department has a wide extra-curricular programme, with social evenings, exchanges, study visits and visiting speakers from international business and overseas institutions, all with the aim of emphasising languages in the real world.
