Whatever their aspirations, pupils leave our Sixth Form with the flexibility, resilience and creativity they need to face the future with confidence and optimism.

The Sixth Form at Uppingham offers a unique experience. During these two years of focused study, pupils build a strong, supportive community; growing and preparing together for the challenges and opportunities of life after school.

These are important formative years for any young person, and we expect a lot of our Sixth Formers. We expect them to be leaders in the school, but also to know how to be part of a team, to fulfil roles and to collaborate.

At its heart, the Sixth Form involves the in-depth study of three or four specialist subjects. The courses we offer are rigorous and intellectually demanding, while providing the flexibility to allow pupils to follow their own interests, aptitudes and aspirations. We offer A levels in a broad range of subjects, as well as Pre-U courses in Art and Design Technology, Fashion & Textiles, and History of Art. We also offer a BTEC Extended Certificate in Sport.

To ensure our Sixth Formers enjoy a broad, stimulating and varied learning experience, they also follow a parallel curriculum, which is timetabled into the week. This provides a range of options to enhance, extend and embellish Sixth Form studies. Pupils choose from:

  • Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) – well-regarded by universities, this requires pupils to choose a topic, conduct research, record their findings and produce a 4,000-word report or artefact to present to their peers.
  • Sports Leadership Certificate Level 2 – a nationally-recognised qualification that develops sports coaching and leadership skills. It involves classroom-based learning and skills practice, as well as ten hours of practical application with groups.
  • Diplôme d'études en langue française (DELF) – an internationally recognised language proficiency qualification, awarded by the French Ministry of Education, to verify the French language skills of non-French candidates.
  • Introduction to Psychology – pupils study the fundamentals of psychology, with a focus on designing, conducting and analysing psychological experiments.

Through the core and parallel curriculum, as well as social events and community initiatives, we encourage and inspire Sixth Form pupils to become self-aware, thoughtful and independent individuals. We apply our knowledge and experience to help them explore their motivations, strengths and aspirations; so that they can choose the right path for them – whether that’s art college, professional apprenticeship or Ivy League university.
