Studying Psychology offers pupils a fascinating exploration into the human mind and behaviour.
As a subject that bridges the sciences and the humanities, pupils are invited to think critically, analyse deeply, and engage with some of the most compelling questions about why we think, feel, and act the way we do.
Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes. It challenges pupils to explore how individuals develop, interact, and respond to their environments. From understanding memory and attachment to investigating mental health and social influence, Psychology provides a rich and varied curriculum that is both intellectually stimulating and deeply relevant to everyday life.
This subject is ideal for those who are curious about human nature, enjoy analytical thinking, and are keen to develop skills in research and evaluation. It complements a wide range of other subjects, including Biology, Maths, English, History, and Business/Economics.
The course delivered is the AQA A level Psychology course, assessed through three written papers, each lasting two hours and comprising multiple choice, short answer, and extended writing questions. Topics include social influence, clinical psychology and mental health, issues and debates in psychology and research methods.
While there is no formal coursework, pupils will be expected to design and carry out their own investigations, developing practical research skills, independence and scientific thinking.
The teaching takes place within the Science Faculty, meaning that pupils benefit from exceptional and inspirational facilities. There are also opportunities to gain insights into psychology beyond the classroom, including visiting the Wellcome Collection and Freud Museum in London, and attending enrichment lectures delivered by guest speakers to examine the theories and applications of psychology in the modern world.
