Uppingham’s educational philosophy is rooted in its heritage whereby Edward Thring, (Headmaster 1853-87) pioneered the concept of a holistic education.

Our approach emphasises a well-rounded education, integrating academic study, music, sports, artistic creativity, performing arts, and wider life-enhancing co-curricular experiences.

Led by Mrs Miranda Melville-Coman (Deputy Head Academic), our Key Stage Three curriculum for Years 7 and 8 is designed to provide a comprehensive, rigorous, and enriching academic programme that prepares pupils for their future studies at GCSE, in the sixth form, and on to university or the workplace.

The Lower School years embrace the same philosophy, offering a sporting and co-curricular programme that mirrors the values of the wider school.

Our Lower School prepares pupils for their senior school years within an environment that is safe, nurturing and secure, but equally one which also provides them with the opportunity to access the wider school around them.

The academic curriculum includes English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Classics, Art & Design, Music, Drama, and French taught in our classrooms across the Uppingham campus.

These subjects are supported by both the Learning Resources and Learning Support Departments. Our dedicated Learning Support Department helps pupils with barriers to learning throughout their educational journey.  Additionally, classroom teachers actively implement inclusive and adaptive teaching practices.

There is also a PSHE programme, which includes age-appropriate ‘careers and futures’ advice, to help the pupils map out the years ahead.
