Each year Scholarships are awarded to young people of exceptional talent.
Uppingham School offers Scholarships in Art, Design and Technology, Drama, Music and Sport. Students excelling in a range of academic subject areas, can apply for an Academic Scholarship.
At Uppingham, scholarships are awarded to students that show a high level of attainment, promise or specialist ability in their chosen subject. If you excel in the above subject areas, we encourage you to consider a Sixth Form Scholarship at Uppingham.
You can learn more about subject options at Sixth Form, by reading our Options Guide. Uppingham also runs Visiting Days, where you can visit the school and ask questions. Please read on for more details.
Fee-Assisted Awards
At Uppingham, we want to ensure there is no financial barrier to studying with us. If you win a Sixth Form Scholarship, you are eligible to apply for a Fee Assisted Award. Fee assistance can provide a reduction of anything between 5% to 110% of school fees.
Awards of 105% and above cover all school fees, with an additional sum supporting other costs such as uniforms and trips. Awards of 100% and under will go solely toward school fees. The final level of award on offer is dependent on a household’s income and assets. This is determined by a financial assessment or ‘Means Test’.
The Means Test is completed by families during the application process. Fee Assistance enables families on lower incomes to access an Uppingham education. Families with higher incomes may also apply, however the higher the income and assets, the lower the fee assistance they may receive.
GCSE Requirements
Candidates applying for an Academic Scholarship will expect to achieve grades 8 or 9 at GCSE in a majority of academic subjects. Pupils who demonstrate outstanding ability in a select number of subjects may also be considered.
For Art, Design and Technology, Drama, Music and Sport Scholarships, candidates will demonstrate outstanding ability and potential, in their chosen subject area. In addition, candidates must achieve at least three passes of grade 7 and three passes of grade 6 in academic subjects at GCSE.
Entry Examinations
All scholarship candidates sit papers in Mathematics (30 minutes, calculator permitted) and English (45 minutes, essay-based). Pupils applying for an Academic Scholarship will sit a further two papers in a subject of their choosing (45 minutes each), plus two interviews with senior staff members.

Day and Boarding
Pupils awarded a Scholarship, will be enrolled in our Day House, Li Kwok Po House. It offers space to study and socialise, with breakfast and lunch provided. Most Day pupils live within around 40 minutes of Uppingham and return home at the end of each day. It is essential all candidates check their travel options prior to applying. The school offers a bus service and will support where it can, should transport be problematic.
For pupils that live at a distance or cannot travel into school, you may be eligible for a place in one of our Boarding Houses. At Uppingham, many pupils board during term-time, returning home for school holidays and leave out weekends. You can our view term times here. If you’d like to be considered for boarding, please notify us during your application.
